The Relationship between Plans and Procedures

This paper identifies new challenges for knowledge-based planning research by examining the relationship between plans and procedures. Procedures are plan-like data structures containing variables. Typically, one procedure abstracts many plans. Just prior to or during execution, a procedure is selected and instantiated fully according to the prevailing situation. Procedures can be constructed using modified plan generation techniques, or they can be obtained by generalising proven plans. Challenges include selecting the variables to remain uninstantiated, modifying plan generation algorithms to halt before operator instantiation is complete, generalising plans, interleaving instantiation and execution, and adding knowledge-gaining actions. Existing techniques, such as domain modelling and least-commitment and HTN planning, may have a role to play.
